Istria is situated between Croatia and Slovenia, between the Kvarner coast and the Gulf of Trieste. It has been split since 1945 between Croatia (whose country it most closely resembles), Slovenia (whose only seaport is in northern Istria), and Italy (which has held a very small territory, almost immediately south of Trieste). The westernmost prefecture in Croatia is Istra. Important cities including Pula, Pore, Rovinj, Pazin, Labin, Motovun, Buzet, Buje, Umag, and Vrsar are located on the peninsula. Istria also has minor populations of the Dragu, Ro, and Hum. The seaside towns of Piran, Izola, and Koper are located in Slovenia’s northern area.
