The center and the beach city of Paphos is located in southwest Cyprus. In classical antiquity, the two locations that bore the name Paphos were Old Paphos, today referred to as Kouklia, and New Paphos. The modern city of Paphos is located on the Mediterranean coast, some 50 kilometers (30 miles) west of Limassol, the island’s largest port, and is connected to it by the A6 motorway. Paphos International Airport is the second-largest airport in the country. The city has a subtropical Mediterranean climate. Paphos was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980 as a result of the prominence of its ancient architecture, mosaics, and historical religious significance. It was selected as one of the 2017 European Capitals of Culture along with Aarhus.
